Lite Registration

To increase user acquisition and reduce friction in the onboarding process, we designed a Lite Registration flow for an online lottery platform. This streamlined experience allows users to quickly create an account with minimal input, enabling immediate access to gameplay while maintaining compliance and security.

Problem

The existing registration process was lengthy and required users to provide extensive personal information upfront. This led to high drop-off rates, especially among casual users who wanted to try the platform without committing to a full registration.

Problem Statement - How Might We...

How might we reduce friction in the registration process to allow users to quickly create an account and start playing the lottery online, while still meeting legal and operational requirements?

Exploration

We explored:

  • User journey mapping to identify pain points in the current registration flow.

  • Competitive analysis of similar platforms with simplified onboarding.

  • Stakeholder interviews with legal, compliance, and engineering teams to understand constraints.

  • User interviews with casual lottery players to gauge expectations and motivations.

Key insights:

  • Users wanted to “try before they commit.”

  • Most users were deterred by the need to provide sensitive information upfront.

  • Legal requirements allowed for a phased data collection approach.

Feasibility

Collaborated with:

  • Legal & Compliance to define the minimum viable data set (e.g., email, password, age confirmation).

  • Engineering to ensure backend support for phased registration and account upgrades.

  • Marketing to align messaging and incentives for full registration later.

Validated feasibility through:

  • Technical prototyping

  • Risk assessment

  • Stakeholder alignment workshops

Solution

We designed:

  • Just three fields: email, password, and age confirmation checkbox.

  • A clear value proposition: “Start playing instantly.”

  • A progressive disclosure model: users can upgrade their account later to access withdrawals and other features.

  • Visual hierarchy optimized for clarity and trust.

Impact

  • 35% increase in registration conversion rate within the first month.

  • 20% reduction in bounce rate on the registration page.

  • Higher engagement among new users, with 60% completing full registration within 7 days.

  • Positive feedback from users who appreciated the ease and speed of onboarding.

Takeaways

  • Less is more: Reducing cognitive load at entry points can significantly boost conversion.

  • Cross-functional collaboration is key to balancing user experience with regulatory constraints.

  • Progressive onboarding is a powerful tool for platforms with complex requirements.

  • Always validate assumptions with real users—what seems “too simple” might be exactly what they need.
